Create a simple Facebook Header with Gimp

Hi to all

Today we create a simple header your Facebook Page when you have a Facebook Page.

Before we starting, think about it what will you say, with the Header. Work you for a company is it good to place the Logo in it, is it a privacy Chronicle so think what will you tell the people with your Page. The header with a Logo or Profile Picture is the first what the most People looked at. Also think about it what you will place in the Header.

You can download a lot of Images from the Internet. Please note the copyrights for the Images what you choose, not all Images what you see in the Internet is copyright free.

When you search with Google give in what you search and after it .png or .jpeg or .svg or what you search, go then to the search results from Google. I have give in as example “linux.png”.

You see in Google now “Search Tools” click on it it open a little bar with Options.

You can refine your search here, the most important so as for me ( i live in Germany. And we have strict copyright rights here.) Open there the Tab “Usage Rights”, and set it to “Labeled for Reuse with modification”, and you can refine the “Color Tab” and set it to “Transparency” now search what you like.

And now before we starting a short view to the Measurements for you Profile Picture and your Header Image.

Your Page’s profile picture:
  • Displays at 160×160 pixels on your Page on computers, 128×128 pixels on smartphones and 36×36 pixels on most feature phones
  • Will be cropped to fit a square
Your Page’s cover photo:
  • Displays at 828 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall on your Page on computers and 640 pixels wide by 360 pixels tall on smartphones
  • Doesn’t display on feature phones
  • Must be at least 399 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall
  • Loads fastest as an sRGB JPG file that’s 851 pixels wide, 315 pixels tall and less than 100 kilobytes
For profile pictures and cover photos with your logo or text, you may get a better result by using a PNG file.
So now we starting:
Open Gimp
Go to File>New and create a new Image, i personally take each Time a size from 1,920 x 603 px

Now grab the Blend Tool and search a Gradient what you like.

Now we will get a Icon on it, or a ready company Logo, i use here as example a Tux Icon. Go to File>Open as Layer and search you favorite Logo / Icon.

Place the Logo / Icon with the move Tool on the right position what you mean but Note: On Facebook Sites you have no Text in it, at Facebook Groups you have Text and Buttons there, so as here on my Pisi Linux Global Group:

Also Place the Logo / Icon on the position what you see

Now you can create a Text in it, open the Text Tool and choose your Font and you can do a click in your Background, Gimp make a new Layer automatically, when you are ready move the Text with the Move Tool to the right Position.

Now you can create any other to your Image work with the brush as example

Open for that a new Layer with transparency Background, i have add the two nice Smoke whirlwinds with the Brush Tool

You can now add a color to it with the Blend Tool, click on your Layer with the Brush right and go to ” Alpha to Selection” grab the Blend Tool with the Gradient what you like and go in the Layer (you see marching Ants) on it and place your Gradient from the left to the right, or from the Top to the Bottom so as you like it. Was it not ok you can always back when you go on Edit>Undo… And Note when you have add your Gradient there go all Time to “Select” and click on “None.

After it Export your image as .png and you can safe your work as .xcf, so can you work with it again, Gimp save the steps there.

So that was it all from me now, have Fun to try this Tutorial, and many thanks for reading.

And as all Times, the work with Gimp is simple and easy, try it.
